We loosely define ‘Science behind the News’ to include:
- science underlying news items in the general media
- new science reported in the media
- topical science relating to everyday life.
For each of our meetings, two (or three or four) members prepare a talk on a scientific topic of their choice. These talks often give rise to discussion and questions, and sometimes the questions lead to further ideas for talks. Often talks are supported by PowerPoint slides but we've had some great talks without visual aids.

Past topics have included:
- DeepMind and Alphafold
- Cement
- Santa's nightshift
- Horizon system bug
- House martins
- Heat pumps
- Multiple scerosis and genes
- Mapping earthquakes using radar
- PSA testing
