News

Perth u3a regularly publishes news and information on this website. In addition, information about forthcoming events, news about groups and other notices for members are collected together in our News Roundups, and members with email are alerted to the publication of a new edition. This is usually after each Open Meeting.

Christmas Lunch 2025

At our Christmas Lunch in December, after-dinner entertainment was provided by our very own Semi-Tones Group. A good time was had by all.

Open meeting about Horns

At our Open Meeting in April, a Perth u3a member, Trevor Harrison, gave an illustrated talk about 'Horns'. Trevor focussed on the development of the horn as a musical instrument, starting with animal horns. He moved on to the introduction of different lengths of pipe called crooks to enable different series of notes to be played. He then explained the introduction of valves in the French horn, allowing greater flexibility, and hand stopping, a method of changing pitch by putting the right hand into the bell. Further development involved the double horn, essentially two French horns, one on top of the other with a single mouthpiece. Trevor explained that horn players generally play German horns, which are double horns, not necessarily made in Germany! It was altogether informative and fascinating. (April 2025)

Our banner going up in Unit 7

A work party comprising Pete Trant and Dave Smith met in Unit 7 to hang our banner on the wall. The banner was made to celebrate our 21st anniversary in 2006. It needed a little mending by the leader of the Crafts group, Dorothy Traynor, before it could be hung. It has panels relating to the groups available to members at the time. A booklet describing its creation is available near the banner. (August 2024)
