Research is what sets us aside from many other groups! The purpose of 3D is for group members to answer their own burning questions that they have oft mused that they would like an answer to but haven’t got round to it to researching it. Well, with 3D, getting round to it and sharing is the whole purpose of the group.

As a member you are expected to Delve into that question, use credible and verifiable sources to Discover the answer; then make a short presentation to the group in whatever format suits you so that the topic can be Discussed. You will likely be asked Why? How? When? What? and Who? questions by group members who have tended to be an enthusiastic, lively and inquisitive lot!. But you won’t be expected to have Mastermind level knowledge, just sufficient interest to engage in discussion.generate curiosity. An unexpected bonus has been that the computer places us in pole position on the groups list!

Many subjects introduced may be the result of a member taking a free OpenLearn or other academic short course of a few hours because the subject matter relates to something in their own interests and they want to find out more and share; or where a member is curious about a place they used to live with an unusual history and feel it would interest the group; or an individual in history who has an engaging back story. You will find a summary of each meeting from February 2024 on the Notes below. These will give you an idea of our wide-ranging and convivial conversations. We often stray from our starting points, but meetings have never been described as boring!

We’ve discussed the likelihood of a monkey with a keyboard writing a Shakespeare play; the moon from a physical and geopolitical standpoint (and its influence on the gardening calendar); a review of diplomacy on an individual and international level; Open Street map and its various applications at home and abroad; the phrase “Good fences do good neighbours make”; why are non- human animals victims of harm; Corruption; African economic development; Dutch art; Corvids’ attitude to death; the history and societal mores of toilet roll. These are some of the examples of topics in the last 18 months.

The group have been a curious lot!

In each meeting we try to get 4 presentations – so members don’t have to present every time – and it gives us sufficient time for discussion and going off in interesting tangents which often give group members ideas for other 3D topics.

If this sounds just your sort of group – come and join us!
