This is a new group. This year our chosen decade will be the 1890’s.
Each month each of us will choose a topic within the overall theme that we have set for the meeting. For the first month the theme was “Arts and Crafts” and the choices included “Chinese Influence on Arts and Crafts”, “Morris’s Red House” and “Metalwork”. During the meeting each of us spoke for about 10 minutes about our chosen topic, answered questions and listened to what everybody else had to say. It all worked out very well and a great time was had by all! That will be the pattern for the year. Themes for future meetings include The Decadent Movement, Art Nouveau and Glasgow Style.
Suggested topics within the theme for week 1 were
- The Great Exhibition (1851)
- Honesty in Design
- Philip Webb and the Red House
- William Morris
- Metalwork and Decorative Hinges
- The Sussex Chair
- Wallpapers and Nature
- The Kelmscott Press
Some people chose from this list, others looked beyond it. Each month there will be a similar list of topics based on the theme for that particular month, but we might all ignore it and find our own topic within the overall theme.
